SWIMMING POOL ENGINEERING CAPABILITIES

Swimming Pool Projects We Can Engineer

Ostanes Engineering works with homeowners, pool builders, architects, and certifiers across Queensland. We design robust pool shells, foundation interfaces, and structural reinforcement tailored to your site conditions.

In-Ground Reinforced-Concrete Pools

Monolithic reinforced concrete walls and base slab acting as an integrated water-retaining structure. Engineered for water loads, soil reactivity, hydrostatic uplift, and builder-specific shotcrete or poured-concrete methods.

Partly Above-Ground & Exposed-Wall Pools

Specialist structural analysis for pools built on sloping ground, infinity edges, or out-of-ground walls. Exposed walls are engineered to resist internal hydrostatic pressure without surrounding passive soil support.

Fibreglass & Proprietary Pool Systems

Site-specific foundation design, bedding, hold-down anchorage, concrete bond beams, and surrounding structural slabs complementing manufacturer installation manuals and local soil constraints.

Pools Near Buildings, Boundaries & Retaining Walls

Zone of influence calculations and footing protection when excavating close to house foundations, boundaries, or retaining walls to safeguard existing structures during excavation.

ENGINEERING COMPLIANCE & SAFETY

When Do You Need a Structural Engineer for a Swimming Pool?

📋 Certifier & Building Approval

Engineering drawings and Form 15 compliance documents are required by your private building certifier before excavation and construction can begin.

📐 Custom Shapes & Depths

Site-specific reinforced concrete shells with irregular geometries, integrated concrete spas, variable floor depths, ledges, and swim-out benches.

⛰️ Sloping Sites & Out-of-Ground Walls

Partly above-ground pool walls or cantilevered designs where the pool structure must resist water loads without natural external soil backfill.

🌱 Reactive Clay & Poor Ground

Sites with highly reactive clay (Class H/E), uncontrolled fill, or low bearing capacity requiring deep piering and foundation engineering.

💧 Groundwater & Hydrostatic Uplift

High water table conditions where an empty or partly empty pool risks floating (buoyancy uplift), requiring hydrostatic valves, gravel beds, and ballast design.

🏠 Close to Buildings & Infrastructure

Excavations close to house footings, boundary fences, or urban water and sewer mains requiring QDC MP 1.4 compliance and angle of repose assessments.

HOW IT WORKS

Our 5-Step Swimming Pool Engineering Process

STEP 1

Project Information Review

We review your site survey, soil report, architectural concept, pool dimensions, and manufacturer specifications.

STEP 2

Site & Constraint Assessment

We assess boundary setbacks, existing house footings, retaining walls, slopes, and proximity to sewer/water mains.

STEP 3

Structural Analysis

Our RPEQ engineers model hydrostatic water pressures, external earth loads, empty-pool buoyancy risks, and surcharge pressures.

STEP 4

Structural Design & Detailing

We specify reinforced wall sections, base slab thicknesses, steel mesh/bar schedules, construction joints, and penetrations.

STEP 5

Documentation & Form 15

We issue complete construction drawings, engineering design notes, calculations, and an RPEQ Form 15 ready for building certifier approval.

We had a underpinning company quote us $10,000+ to fix an issue with our house foundation. I wanted to get a 2nd opinion and that of a structural engineer because i didn't want to pay for something i didn't need. Shoja was very knowledgeable and thorough. He checked our entire house for structural issues and concluded that the house was fine and didn't need underpinning!! They also don't carry put work that they recommend to avoid conflict of interest. I am so glad we found them, it has saved us tens of thousands of dollar of unnecessary work
Response from the owner:Lisan, we’re really pleased we could help you get a clear and independent assessment. Dr. Shoja was happy to take the time to check everything thoroughly, and it’s great to hear the outcome saved you from unnecessary work and expense. If you ever need guidance again, we’re here to help anytime! 𝐎𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠

FAQ & ENGINEERING GUIDE

Swimming Pool Structural Engineering FAQs

Pool projects require site-specific plans and engineering specifications for the building-approval process. The exact structural engineering scope depends on the pool system, site conditions, soil classification, and requirements set by your private building certifier.

Yes. The QBCC requires building approval to be obtained from a private building certifier or local council before constructing any swimming pool in Queensland. Separate planning, infrastructure referrals, and pool-barrier compliance regulations also apply.

Not automatically in every situation. A soil or geotechnical report may be necessary where ground bearing capacity, reactivity, fill thickness, excavation slope stability, or high water table conditions cannot be established from existing information.

Ostanes provides complete reinforced-concrete pool-shell engineering and assesses site-specific structural support, bedding, anchorage, and concrete bond beams for fibreglass or proprietary pools complementing manufacturer installation manuals.

Not every pool project requires a site visit. Clear site surveys, soil test reports, photographs, architectural plans, and manufacturer documentation often provide sufficient engineering information. An on-site visit is recommended where complex slopes, limited access, or existing structural interfaces require direct inspection.

Depending on the agreed scope, deliverables include complete pool-shell structural drawings, wall and base-slab sections, reinforcement schedules, foundation details, structural design calculations, and an RPEQ Form 15 Certificate.

Yes. We coordinate directly with your pool builder, architect, building designer, and certifier. The builder remains responsible for construction, while the certifier manages the building approval and certification process.

The zone of influence must be assessed prior to excavation. Existing house footings, boundary retaining walls, and council sewer or stormwater mains can impact pool location and require specialized deep piering, angle of repose engineering, or QDC MP 1.4 build-over-sewer approvals.

A new pool design service is not the correct pathway. Existing structural cracking, settlement, or movement should be evaluated through our Structural Inspection Services, while undocumented or unapproved pool construction should be certified via Retrospective Certification.
