PATIO ENGINEERING CAPABILITIES

Patio Types We Can Engineer

A patio creates a covered outdoor space for entertaining. Structurally, it is a lightweight roof exposed to significant wind pressure, uplift, and lateral loads. We engineer steel, timber, insulated panel and kit patio systems across Queensland.

Attached Patio Roofs

Engineered ledger and rafter tie-ins transferring structural actions safely into existing house wall framing or roof trusses without relying on non-structural fascia.

Freestanding Patios

Self-supporting garden and poolside patio structures with complete independent lateral stability, portal action, and dedicated pad footings resisting wind uplift.

Flyover & Raised-Roof Patios

Flyover brackets extending through house roofs to maximise ceiling height and natural airflow, engineered to carry severe wind uplift into house top plates.

Insulated Panel & Custom Patios

Long-span insulated composite roof panels (Bondor, SolarSpan, etc.), custom skillion/gable frames, and site-specific engineering complementing deck engineering projects.

ENGINEERING COMPLIANCE & SAFETY

When Do You Need a Structural Engineer for a Patio?

📐 Long Spans & Minimal Posts

When outdoor living designs require wide post spacings for unobstructed alfresco areas, requiring engineered primary beams and rigid connections.

🏠 Fascia & House Connections

Fascia boards alone cannot carry patio wind uplift. We engineer structural brackets transferring loads into existing wall top plates or rafters.

💨 Wind Uplift on Open Roofs

Open-sided patios experience severe upward aerodynamic suction under AS/NZS 1170.2, requiring heavy tie-downs and uplift-resistant anchor brackets.

🌤️ Flyover Roof Interfaces

Flyover posts penetrating existing roof tiles or metal sheets require engineered roof brackets transferring vertical and overturning moments safely.

🌱 Slabs & Footings on Soil

Existing unreinforced patio slabs cannot be assumed to support roof column loads. Our foundation engineering designs independent pad footings or bored piers.

🏊 Near Pools & Boundaries

Patios constructed beside swimming pools, boundary setbacks, or retaining walls require footings founded below the structural angle of repose.

HOW IT WORKS

Our 5-Step Patio Engineering Process

STEP 1

Project Information Review

We review patio dimensions, roof pitch, attached/freestanding/flyover layout, materials, and kit drawings.

STEP 2

Site & Existing Structure Review

We assess house wall framing, roof structure, wind classifications, patio slab capacity, and boundary setbacks.

STEP 3

Structural Analysis & Design

Our RPEQ engineers model aerodynamic wind uplift, roof panel spans, beam sizing, posts, tie-downs, and footings.

STEP 4

Engineering Drawings

We prepare detailed framing plans, member schedules, house-attachment details, flyover bracket notes, and pad footings.

STEP 5

Documentation & Form 15

We issue complete construction drawings, engineering design notes, calculations, and an RPEQ Form 15 ready for building certifier approval.

We had a underpinning company quote us $10,000+ to fix an issue with our house foundation. I wanted to get a 2nd opinion and that of a structural engineer because i didn't want to pay for something i didn't need. Shoja was very knowledgeable and thorough. He checked our entire house for structural issues and concluded that the house was fine and didn't need underpinning!! They also don't carry put work that they recommend to avoid conflict of interest. I am so glad we found them, it has saved us tens of thousands of dollar of unnecessary work
Response from the owner:Lisan, we’re really pleased we could help you get a clear and independent assessment. Dr. Shoja was happy to take the time to check everything thoroughly, and it’s great to hear the outcome saved you from unnecessary work and expense. If you ever need guidance again, we’re here to help anytime! 𝐎𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠

FAQ & ENGINEERING GUIDE

Patio Structural Engineering FAQs

Engineering may be required where a building certifier requests structural documentation or where the patio uses custom framing, substantial spans, house connections, site-specific footings or details outside a proprietary system. Approval and engineering requirements must be confirmed for the specific property.

Only if the proposed structure, wind classification, spans, connections and site conditions fall within the kit documentation. Site-specific footings, house attachments or modifications may require additional engineering.

It should not be assumed that the fascia alone can carry patio loads. The connection must transfer forces into suitable house framing using a detail appropriate to the existing construction.

Possibly, but the slab must have adequate capacity, thickness, reinforcement, edge distance and support. If these cannot be confirmed, dedicated footings or another engineered detail may be necessary.

Not for every patio. The engineer will consider the available site information, footing reactions and ground conditions. A geotechnical investigation may be requested where soil conditions are uncertain or materially affect the design.

Where Form 15 is required, included in the agreed scope and accepted by the building certifier, the responsible competent person can prepare the appropriate design-specification certificate. It should not be promised automatically for every enquiry.

An existing structure requires a different process because concealed materials, connections and footings may need investigation. Route these enquiries to Retrospective Certification rather than treating them as new patio design.

Enclosure can change the structure’s use, loads, weatherproofing, fire, ventilation and energy-efficiency requirements. This should be assessed as a renovation or extension with our Structural Inspection services, with the classification confirmed by your certifier.
